The outdoor variety tends to be made from manmade materials that are pliable enough to be woven into a wicker rocking chair. Traditionally wicker patio furniture made from natural fibers was avoided as it was subject to fading, mildew and other damage caused by weather. New advances in furniture design have developed an environmentally friendly recycled fiber that closely resembles the weave of traditional wicker furniture but it is so resistant to weather conditions, it makes it perfect for using as an outdoor wicker rocker for example. You can even use it beside your pool as it isn’t affected by chlorine. As with any material the quality varies depending on the supplier and the budget you have to spend but some of the higher grade materials can be left outdoors all year round without fear of damage.
You will need to invest in some wicker furniture cushions though as sitting without them on this surface would make even the most cushioned posterior uncomfortable. Most people don’t expect to see a patio furniture rocking chair so it may cause a few arguments as to gets to sit in it. You might want to invest in two. If you have small children, you will need to keep an eye on them as they can cause the wicker rockign chair to turn over. If this happens in a garden it could lead to a nasty injury.
The term wicker actually refers to the process of weaving materials into furniture rather than the name of an actual material. A wicker rocking chair can be made from any number of grasses, vines or plants usually willow, bamboo, rattan or reed. Rattan is the most popular for indoor wicker furniture although increasing numbers of bamboo suites made in the Far East are being imported.
An outdoor wicker rocking chair will usually have an aluminum frame and be treated with UV filters to help prevent damage from the sun. This doesn’t mean that you can leave your patio furniture sitting in direct sunlight all day long though. Doing this will lead to permanent damage such as flaking and cracking. Depending on the type and cost of the furniture you buy, you may be able to have some pieces repaired if they do get damaged but it makes more sense to take adequate precautions in the first place.
Indoor furniture such as a wicker ottoman or coffee table can add a dash of personality to your home. These pieces became popular in the Victorian era when people first started visiting Southeast Asia and bringing home some of the furniture styles they saw on their travels. Bamboo or wicker furniture is very common in this area not least due to the abundant supply of the raw materials. You can often find antique wicker rocking chairs that originated from this era.
